Support JSAR

JSAR is an all-volunteer search-and-rescue organization. Because we operate on limited funds and SAR work requires some costly equipment, we are appreciative of efforts by the community to support our work. Here are examples of our typical costs:

  • Service and app to alert volunteers of missions: $175 annually
  • Replacing rescue and climbing ropes: average $400 annually
  • Replacing and upgrading rigging equipment: average $600 annually
  • Tuition for one volunteer to attend EMT class: $675
  • Service for team InReach satellite communicators: average $1000 annually
  • Replacement of one radio direction finder to track ELT/PLB/EPIRBs: $2500
  • Replacement of one wheeled litter: $6000

As another example, in 2019 we upgraded portable radios, batteries and chargers to multi-bank radios (purchased used and refurbished) and lithium-ion batteries at a cost of several thousand dollars. Radio stocks in both our vehicles are now sufficient to equip ground teams for a typical mission. Much of the equipment that we use requires this kind of occasional upgrade and is made possible by contributions to our fundraising efforts.

Crab Pot Sales

One of our primary fundraising mechanisms is the sale of recovered/donated crab pots and related accessories. Purchasing from our periodic sales held in the Port Townsend area is a great way to support JSAR while returning recovered gear to service.

Notifications of upcoming crab-pot sales are posted here.

We typically have the following for sale:

  • Kits including a crab pot, line and float
  • Individual crab pots of various designs
  • Individual accessories, including line and floats
  • Small quantity of shrimp pots
  • Small quantity of commercial crab pots
